See the Penguins Come Marching Home

For close encounters of the bird (and animal) kind, Phillip Island is hard to beat.

Experience the twilight parade of the fairy penguins, observe the fur seals, shearwaters, koalas and other unique Australian fauna.

Phillip Island is close enough to Melboune for a daytrip by road. Return in the evening.

An interesting sidelight to the subject of fairy penguins is the attempt to rename them "little penguins" in the charged atmosphere of political correctness where "fairy" could connote something else. I think the term "fairy penguins" is miles more evocative of these land/sea creatures than the bland, bland, bland "little penguins."

When in Melbourne another daytrip to consider is heading west to the scenic, coastal Great Ocean Road and visiting the Twelve Apostles.

Hey, There's Hamilton Island

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is without doubt one of the country's most visited destinations, and the place new visitors to Australia plan to go to.

But the Reef is all of 2000 kilometres long stretching from the Torres Strait in the north all the way down to the south of the Tropic of Capricorn. So there's always the question of where to start and where to go.

There's Cairns, of course, the generally accepted gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. And you can go to Green Island from there.

And on the Tropic of Capricorn, there's Heron Island, another of Queensland's resort islands on the Reef.

In fact, there are quite a number of Queensland coastal towns which are jump-off points to the Reef, like Airlie Beach south of Bowen where you can catch a ferry to the Whitsunday Islands.

And, hey, there's Hamilton Island, one of the most acccessible resort islands in the Whitsunday group.

Walk Among the Canberra Flowers

Yes, it's that time of the year again when Canberra spreads a carpet of flowers to welcome you to Australia's national capital.

This year, Canberra's festival of the flowers, Floriade, is being held from September 11 to October 10 on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin.

The Floriade theme this year is Imagination and it will be interesting to see how this is translated into floral configurations.

If you're in Sydney, it's a leisurely half day's drive to Canberra through the Hume and Federal Highways. While there take time to visit Canberra's other attractions as well.
